The IEC 60364-7-701 (DIN VDE 0100-701) regulates electrical installations in rooms with baths and showers. The standard defines different protection zones where different requirements apply to electrical equipment. Correct compliance with these zones is critical for user safety.
Electrical installations in bathrooms must only be carried out by a qualified electrician. The protection zones must be strictly observed – errors can be life-threatening.
The bathroom is divided into three protection zones (Zone 0, 1 and 2) and an area outside the zones. Each zone has specific requirements for IP protection rating and permitted equipment.

Zone 0 covers the interior of the bathtub or shower tray. For flush-floor showers, it extends 10 cm above the floor within a 120 cm radius of the shower head.
Zone 1 extends vertically above Zone 0 up to a height of 2.25 m above the floor. For showers without a tray, the zone extends 120 cm from the water connection.
Zone 2 extends 60 cm horizontally beyond Zone 1, up to a height of 2.25 m. This area allows more options for electrical installations.
Outside the protection zones, general installation regulations apply. Nevertheless, precautions should be taken as it is still a wet room.
The IP rating (Ingress Protection) indicates how well a device is protected against water ingress. The second digit is particularly relevant for wet rooms.
| Zone | Min. IP Rating | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Zone 0 | IPX7 | Protection against temporary immersion (30 min, 1 m depth) |
| Zone 1 | IPX5 | Protection against water jets from all directions |
| Zone 2 | IPX4 | Protection against splash water from all directions |
Socket installed in Zone 2
Standard power sockets are not permitted in Zone 2. Only shaver sockets with isolating transformers are allowed.
Wrong IP protection rating used
In Zone 1, luminaires with only IPX4 are often installed – but at least IPX5 (jet water protection) is required.
Protection zones incorrectly measured for flush-floor showers
For walk-in showers without a tray, special rules apply: Zone 1 is measured from the shower head connection, not from a tray edge.
