Bathroom Protection Zones – Electrical Installation Guide

Bathroom Protection Zones IP Rating Wet Room

The IEC 60364-7-701 (DIN VDE 0100-701) regulates electrical installations in rooms with baths and showers. The standard defines different protection zones where different requirements apply to electrical equipment. Correct compliance with these zones is critical for user safety.

Safety Notice

Electrical installations in bathrooms must only be carried out by a qualified electrician. The protection zones must be strictly observed – errors can be life-threatening.

Protection Zones Overview

The bathroom is divided into three protection zones (Zone 0, 1 and 2) and an area outside the zones. Each zone has specific requirements for IP protection rating and permitted equipment.

Illustration of bathroom protection zones

Zone 0 – Inside the Bath/Shower

Zone 0 covers the interior of the bathtub or shower tray. For flush-floor showers, it extends 10 cm above the floor within a 120 cm radius of the shower head.

Zone 0 Requirements

  • Only SELV devices (Safety Extra Low Voltage) up to max. 12V AC / 30V DC permitted
  • Minimum protection rating IPX7 (protection against temporary immersion)
  • No sockets, switches or other equipment allowed

Zone 1 – Above Bath/Shower

Zone 1 extends vertically above Zone 0 up to a height of 2.25 m above the floor. For showers without a tray, the zone extends 120 cm from the water connection.

Permitted Equipment in Zone 1

  • Permanently connected water heaters (instantaneous heaters)
  • Permanently connected whirlpool pumps and their controls
  • Luminaires with at least IPX5 rating (protection against water jets)

Zone 2 – 60 cm Around Zone 1

Zone 2 extends 60 cm horizontally beyond Zone 1, up to a height of 2.25 m. This area allows more options for electrical installations.

Permitted Equipment in Zone 2

  • Luminaires with at least IPX4 rating (protection against splash water)
  • Shaver sockets with isolating transformer
  • Permanently connected Class II fans
  • Heating systems with appropriate IP protection rating

Area Outside Protection Zones

Outside the protection zones, general installation regulations apply. Nevertheless, precautions should be taken as it is still a wet room.

Recommendations for Outside Zones

  • Always protect sockets with RCD (30 mA)
  • Minimum IPX1 (drip-proof) recommended for all equipment
  • Plan sufficient sockets for hair dryer, shaver, electric toothbrush, etc.

IP Protection Ratings Overview

The IP rating (Ingress Protection) indicates how well a device is protected against water ingress. The second digit is particularly relevant for wet rooms.

Zone Min. IP Rating Meaning
Zone 0 IPX7 Protection against temporary immersion (30 min, 1 m depth)
Zone 1 IPX5 Protection against water jets from all directions
Zone 2 IPX4 Protection against splash water from all directions

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Socket installed in Zone 2

Standard power sockets are not permitted in Zone 2. Only shaver sockets with isolating transformers are allowed.

Wrong IP protection rating used

In Zone 1, luminaires with only IPX4 are often installed – but at least IPX5 (jet water protection) is required.

Protection zones incorrectly measured for flush-floor showers

For walk-in showers without a tray, special rules apply: Zone 1 is measured from the shower head connection, not from a tray edge.
