DALI Lighting in Residential and Commercial: Advantages, Wiring, Applications

DALI Lighting Smart Home

DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is the professional standard for lighting control. With DALI, luminaires can be individually addressed, dimmed and arranged into scenes — all over two additional wires. This overview explains when DALI is worthwhile and how to plan it.

What DALI is and what DALI-2 does differently

DALI is a simple bus protocol specifically for lighting.

DALI (Basic)

First generation, cross-manufacturer compatible, but differing implementations caused friction.

DALI-2

Current standard. Strictly certified, considerably more functions (emergency light, daylight sensors, multi-master).

Advantage DALI-2

True manufacturer compatibility. Components from various makers can be combined without surprises.

Topology and wiring

DALI is significantly easier to wire than KNX or Loxone.

Wiring

5×1.5 mm² instead of 3×1.5 mm² — the two additional wires are the DALI control line. Polarity doesn't matter.

Topology

Line, star, tree — all allowed. No ring topology. Up to 300 m per DALI line.

Power supply

DALI power supply (e.g. 250 mA) supplies up to 64 devices. Own supply per line.

Addressing

Each device gets an address (0-63). Addressing via commissioning tool or directly in the smart home system.

Where DALI is particularly worthwhile

Office and commercial

Daylight sensors, presence-controlled lighting, automatic outdoor-light adjustment — DALI is the absolute standard here.

Hotel and gastronomy

Scenes like 'reception', 'breakfast', 'dinner' are easily implementable with DALI.

Residential (premium)

Individual light scenes, tunable white, mood lighting in living and kitchen.

Emergency lighting

DALI-2 supports emergency light directly — status check, maintenance notifications, self-test over the bus.

DALI vs. conventional and KNX

Criterion Conventional DALI KNX
Wiring 3×1.5 (1 circuit per group) 5×1.5 (all luminaires 1 cable) 5×1.5 (bus extra)
Dimming Per circuit Per luminaire individually Per actuator
Scenes Difficult Directly possible Via logic
Status feedback No Yes Yes

DALI planning tips

Plan address ranges

Each DALI line has 64 addresses. Plan reserves and group spatially (1 line per floor).

DALI gateway to smart home

In KNX houses: DALI-KNX gateway integrates both worlds. In Loxone: Loxone DALI extension.

Consider tunable white

Tunable-white luminaires need DALI-2 or two DALI addresses per luminaire (one for warm, one for cool). Plan for this early.

Conclusion: DALI is standard for serious lighting control

DALI is set for commercial, increasingly standard in premium residential. The extra cost vs. conventional wiring is manageable, the comfort gain enormous.

💡 Tip: At new builds, run a DALI cable to all ceilings — activating later only costs the power supply and DALI drivers.

DALI lighting in the plan

myElectricPlan supports DALI directly: luminaires can be assigned to groups and scenes — including address range management.
